We want to see your work!
The Pick gives students opportunities to begin publishing careers, opportunities to develop writing and editing skills, and serves as a writing reference tool for students, Southeastern Writing Center tutors, and faculty members. The Pick’s process of submission and collaborative editing before publication mirrors experiences students will have publishing their works in other journals, academic presses, and commercial presses. Celebrate your writer’s voice. We want to see your work!

FAQ
Q: Is it okay for me to submit a paper I wrote for another university?
A:No. All submissions must have been composed to fulfill undergraduate or graduate student class assignments at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Q: What happens after I submit my essay?
A: After submission, The Pick reviews your work for conditional acceptance. Authors of conditionally accepted works meet with a Pick editor to collaborate on revisions proposed by The Pick editorial staff. Southeastern faculty members subsequently complete a second review of submissions and suggest additional modifications. The Pick’s editorial staff then selects from those works that successfully adhere to the peer-and-faculty review process.
Q: How many essays can I sumbit?
A: You may submit as many as you want! However, you can’t submit a previously published work, and all submissions must have been composed to fulfill undergraduate or graduate student class assignments at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Q: Do I have to submit a hard copy and a digital copy?
A:No. You may submit works electronically, or you may submit a hardcopy with accompanying documentation at the Southeastern Louisiana University Writing Center, DVIC room 210.
Q: My instructor/professor/teacher required us to use APA instead of MLA. Can my essay still be considered for publication?
A: Absolutely. You may use any one of these citation styles:
- MLA (Modern Language Association)
- APA (American Psychological Association)
- Chicago Manual of Style(CMS)
- Kate Turabian's A Manual for Writers
You can find information about these style manuals on the "Resources" page of The Pick’s website. Scholars build upon one another’s work, so documentation of sources is central to the scholarly project. You should follow MLA, APA, CMS, and Turabian’s style closely.
Q: What if my paper includes non-academic sources like Wikipedia?
A:If your essay cites a source that is non-academic or the editor or editorial board deems your source unsuitable, you will be asked to find and use another source in your essay.
Q: I've still got some questions. Who can I ask?
A: You can email the editor directly via thepick@selu.edu or stop by the Writing Center in D. Vickers 210. They are always happy to help!
